The department is responsible for monitoring the safety, importation, exportation, storage, distribution, sales and consumption of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas / LPG nationwide.
The department is dedicated to monitoring the safety, importation/exportation and storage of LPG. Stock levels at both Liquified Petroleum Gas Marketing Companies (LPGMC) terminals are now monitored bi–weekly to establish the regulation of maintaining a minimum of three (3) weeks stock level as established in the regulation.
The Agency through the establishment of the three (3) weeks minimum stock level has being able to curtail the issue of scarcity/shortage of LPG/Cooking Gas in the country.
Sierra Leone currently serves as a hub for both Guinea and Liberia as products are being exported to these countries on a monthly basis. At present, the department is able to monitor and record all imports and consumption data nationwide. Safety measures are always observed during importation of LPG as the Agency superintend the discharge operation.
The Department has recently participated in the inaugural launch of the ECOWAS Policy for LPG and also discussing opportunities to expand the sector to meet the growing demands for LPG.
The process of diversification of the sector to include Liquefied Natural Gas/LNG is also with the department and the necessary operational guidelines would be adopted soonest by the Agency.
Currently there are two (2) main Liquefied Petroleum Gas / LPG also known as Cooking Gas importers and storage company operators. Namely: NP Gas SL Limited and AfriGas SL Limited.
