THE PETROLEUM REGULATORY AGENCY ACT 2014 IN SUMMARY

Empowerment for Licensing and Regulation:

The PRA Act 2014 grants the Sierra Leone Petroleum Regulatory Agency the authority to license and regulate the entire downstream petroleum supply chain. This includes importation, storage, transportation, and distribution, with a focus on ensuring regular availability to consumers at reasonable prices.

Scope of Regulatory Authority:

The regulatory authority extends to overseeing the efficiency of the importation, storage, transportation, and distribution of petroleum, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a well-functioning and accessible petroleum supply system.

Consumer-Focused Objective:

The Act underscores the goal of ensuring the regular availability of petroleum to consumers at reasonable prices. This highlights a commitment to consumer welfare and affordability within the petroleum market.

Legal Identity and Rights:

The Agency is granted legal identity and rights by being able to sue and be sued in its corporate name. This legal personality enables the agency to engage in legal proceedings and transactions, reinforcing its position as a distinct entity with specific rights and responsibilities.

Perpetual Succession:

The PRA Act confers perpetual succession to the Sierra Leone Petroleum Regulatory Agency. This means that the agency has continuous and unbroken existence, allowing it to operate seamlessly over time.

Corporate Capacity:

The Agency is endowed with the capacity to acquire, hold, and dispose of any type of property, whether movable or immovable. This provision grants the agency the flexibility to manage and utilize various forms of assets in the pursuit of its regulatory objectives.
